Transportation Alternatives (TA) Funding

Transportation Alternatives (TA) funding is a set-aside within the Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) program of the federal authorizing act. In general, the Transportation Alternatives funding is available for bicycle or pedestrian improvements and certain community enhancements. (Bicycle and pedestrian projects are also eligible for the regular STBG funding.)

The federal TA funds go to the states, and each state apportions half of its TA funds according to population. MPOs serving urbanized areas with at least 200,000 in population, such as CORE MPO, must have a competitive project selection process, collaborating with the state DOT, to determine the use of TA funds that the state allocates to that MPO’s area.

To carry out a competitive project selection process for CORE MPO’s TA funding, the MPO periodically conducts a Transportation Alternatives Call for Projects.
