CUTS/MPO receives PACEsetter Award from Pedestrian Advocates of the Coastal Empire
On May 8, 2007, Pedestrian Advocates of the Coastal Empire (PACE) presented Pete Liakakis, County Commission Chairman and Chairman of CUTS/MPO Policy Committee, and Mark Wilkes, CUTS/MPO Director of Transportation, with PACEsetter awards for the MPO's adoption of the Context Sensitive Design (CSD) manual. The awards ceremony was part of the Safe Kids Savannah annual luncheon, which was held at the Coastal Georgia Bamboo Farm this year.
PACE recognized that the CSD manual supports pedestrian-friendly street treatments in locations where pedestrian transportation should be promoted, based on current or planned qualities of the surrounding area. The organization is dedicated to making the coastal
empire a safe and healthy environment for pedestrians. PACE is a part of Safe Kids Savannah.
CUTS/MPO adopted the manual of street design guidelines in December 2006. With this adoption, CUTS/MPO promotes a balance among the needs of various types of users of public streets.
