Urban Flooding Model Study Phase II

Building on the foundation of Urban Flooding Model Study Phase I, the second phase of the Urban Flood Model focuses on flood data, refining the stormwater modeling, and extending the study area to include all newly incorporated jurisdictions within the CORE MPO boundary.

With continued sea level rise, stronger storms, and rapid regional growth, this phase will integrate updated rainfall data, sea level rise projections, and future development scenarios to more accurately identify roadway vulnerabilities and flood-prone areas. The project will also deliver enhanced GIS tools, refined resilience metrics, and user-friendly mapping applications to support local governments, planners, and the public in making informed, forward-looking decisions.

Project Timeline

This phase began in April 2025 and will provide updated data, new modeling scenarios, public outreach, and user-friendly tools for local governments, agencies, and the public. Project will conclude on March 2027.

Project Team

CORE MPO received federal planning funds, along with a local match, to complete Phase II of the Urban Flood Model. The study is being led by the University of Georgia (UGA) with support from Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC). Together, the team brings expertise in flood modeling, GIS, and transportation planning to help the region better understand and prepare for flooding impacts.

Survey

We invite residents, business owners, local agencies, and community partners to share their flooding experiences through our survey. Your input will help identify problem areas, show how flooding affects daily travel, and guide the development of better tools and strategies in Phase II of the Urban Flood Model. By participating, you’re helping strengthen our region’s transportation resilience and prepare for future storms.

The survey is open until February 6, 2026.
